If they're together and the female in "in heat" the male will never stop "mounting" her until he gets very exhausted, to the point that all he can do is just rest in one side of the cage. or... if the female is not yet fully receptive, and the male will keep on going after her... she might fight back and end up injuring the male hamster. If you’re not intending to breed them, it’s better to separate the male from the female.
